Tuesday Talks

See Details Below FREE 9:00am – 11:00am
A series of nature programs (usually held every other Tuesday) in various locations. For fall migration, extra Tuesday Talks have been added in September! Registration is required for all birding programs, and encouraged for all other programs. Wear light colored clothing and bring bottled water.

Sept 1 – Bird walk at Amico Island, Delran. Bring binoculars. Registration required.
Sept 8 – Bird walk at Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area, Moorestown. Bring binoculars. Registration required.
Sept 15 – Birds & Blooms at Historic Smithville Park. Bring binoculars. Meet at Meade Lane parking lot. Registration required.
Sept 29 – Birds & Blooms at Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area, Moorestown. Bring binoculars. Registration required.
Oct 13 – Nature walk at Amico Island Park, Delran. Bring binoculars.
Oct 27 – Fall foliage tree walk at Smith’s Woods. Meet at Smith’s Woods main parking lot off East Railroad Ave.
Nov 10 – Late fall birding/nature walk at Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area, Moorestown. Bring binoculars. Registration required.

Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners

Part 1: (Indoor class) Thursday September 24, 6:30pm
Do you have a digital camera but really have no idea how to use it beyond pushing the shutter button? Or maybe you just want to know how to take better pictures? Come learn about the basic concepts of composition and techniques for digital photography. (There will be a slant towards nature photography).
Presented by Jen Bulava. Free, but registration is required. Please call 609-265-5068.
Presentation will be held at the EcoComplex auditorium in Mansfield, (exit 52A off I-295).

Part 2: (Outdoor Field trip) Sunday October 4, 3:00 pm
Smithville Park, meet at main visitor parking lot off Meade Lane.
Come practice composition and techniques for digital photography in the park. Participants must bring their own digital cameras. Bringing the instruction manual helps too! Free, but registration is required. Those who show up the day of will not be allowed to participate. Please call 609-265-5068. Rain cancels.

Fall Foliage Nature Walks

Join us for a beautiful autumn walk through the woods to learn and appreciate the diversity of native trees. Dress for the weather. Rain cancels.

Saturday, October 24 FREE 10:00am - 12:00pm
Smith’s Woods section of Smithville Park. Registration suggested. Meet at the kiosk at East Railroad Ave. parking lot. Flat trail allows for easy walking, but does include some steps.

Sunday, November 1 FREE 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Crystal Lake Park. Call for directions. Registration Required. Please note: Trails are very steep in sections and not recommended for inexperienced hikers. Please wear proper shoes for hiking!

Autumn Children’s Programs

Smith’s Woods Area, Smithville Park
Thursday, November 5 (Rain date: Friday November 6)
Schools are closed for the teacher’s convention, but the County Parks are open!
Note: Programs meet at Smith’s Woods main parking lot on East Railroad Ave. near picnic area and restrooms. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents/guardians should be prepared to stay for the duration of the event (typically an hour to an hour and a half). Please call 609-265-5068 to register so that we have enough materials for everyone.

Leaf Hunt FREE 10:00am
Take a short walk on the red trail to look for different types of leaves that have fallen to the ground. Collect your favorite ones, then learn what tree they belong to. Afterwards, students will do a leaf rubbing that they can take with them. Bring a bag to collect leaves in. (ages 4 and up).

Have Seeds Will Travel FREE 1:00pm
Take a short walk on the red trail to look for different types of seeds that have fallen to the ground and collect the seeds you find. Afterwards, students will put all seeds into a group collection and divide into age appropriate groups to discuss and identify what they found. (recommended for 2nd grade & up).

Cleanup & Invasive Plant Removal

Saturday, September 19 9:00am – 12:00noon Long Bridge Park, Hainesport

Saturday, October 3 9:00am – 12:00noon Boundary Creek Park, Moorestown

Come out and help us remove some of the invasive plants and cleanup litter at our County Parks. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Wear light colored clothing and bug repellent. If you have large garden shears, loppers, hand clippers, and rubber boots, please bring them with you. (Litter cleanup will occur in wet/muddy areas and rubber boots are recommended for that purpose). Bags and gloves will be provided. Registration required by calling Clean Communities at 609-499-1001 Ext. 266. Please specify which park you intend to help with and how many in your party.

Introduction to Fly Fishing

Smithville Park, Meade Lane parking lot FREE
Join Park Ranger Chris Derkas as he offers basic guidance on equipment and technique. Learn all you need to know to begin fly fishing. Bring fly rod and reel or just come and listen. Registration required.

Leave No Trace

Saturday, September 12 FREE 10:00am
Smith’s Woods Area, Smithville Park
Park Ranger Chuck Fajgier will introduce participants to the principals of “Leave No Trace” which help preserve limited recreational resources for today and tomorrow and help to ensure a positive experience for those who spend time outdoors.

Ornamental Pond Winterization

Join Park Ranger Ed Klitz and learn proper winterization techniques for your ornamental pond. Parking is limited. Registration required.

Astronomy Night in the Park

Sunday, October 25 FREE 7:00pm – 11:00pm
Smithville Park
Observe the evening sky while stargazing. Dress for the weather; bring bug repellant, lawn chairs or blankets, telescopes and binoculars. Rain cancels.
