Nokomis School Parking Issue

Over the past couple of months, the Medford Lakes Police Department has received and observed numerous parking and traffic violations around the trails adjacent to Nokomis School. The complaints and violations include vehicles parking in front of driveways and encroaching lawns, vehicles parking on the corners of the intersections, on the wrong side of the trail against the flow of traffic, in "No Parking" areas and vehicles parking in the spaces reserved for buses transporting students to school. The complaints are received from homeowners, other motorists, school personnel and police observations alike. The problem stems from when parents are either dropping off or picking up their children from school. It is creating a problem for everyone concerned and causing a safety to risk to all, especially the children.
Generally, the violations have been handled by issuing a warning to the driver. The cold weather is here and the traffic will increase which makes the problem even more challenging. Please be aware of where you park when you leave your vehicle to bring your child into school. If you have to park be respectful to your neighbor and do not block their driveway or park on their lawn. Do not park against the flow of traffic or out in the lane of travel. Please do not park in spaces reserved for buses. If an area is posted "No Parking", it was done so for a reason. Most of all please be very mindful of the children. You are not the only one dropping off or picking up a child at school. Do not try and pass another vehicle because you are late for work, have an appointment or want to get a better parking space.
If you have to bring your child into the school, try to be as quick as possible so you can open up a space for another resident. If you are going to be in the school for an extended period of time utilize the parking spaces on Kenozha Trail or an area away from the mainstream of the school.
The police department is going to continue to monitor the problem and step up enforcement. We will attempt to have patrols out in the area of the school on a daily basis. If an infraction is witnessed by the police or a complaint is generated by a resident, a summons will be issued to the motorist who is in violation. Hopefully with everyone’s cooperation, this will not happen. If any resident has any questions or concerns regarding the parking and traffic situation around Nokomis School, please feel free to call the police department and speak with Corporal Robert Dugan at 654-2156.
