THE BOROUGH OF MEDFORD LAKES TAKES ACTION TO ADVANCE A SHARED SERVICES STUDY OF POLICE SERVICES WITH MEDFORD TOWNSHIP

At its February 25, 2009 meeting, Borough Council approved an application to the Department of Community Affairs for a SHARE grant for a joint study of shared police services with the Township of Medford. Council also approved the issuance of a request for proposals to conduct the shared services study.
Mayor Paul G. Weiss stated, “Council has not completed its evaluation of this critically important issue. We are advancing the analysis of Borough police services through a shared services study with Medford Township. Our expectation is that we will receive useful and timely advice from the experts on how Medford Lakes can deliver police services to its residents in the most cost effective manner, taking into account all tangible and intangible factors.”
Questions may be addressed to: Mayor Paul G. Weiss or Geoffrey Urbanik, Borough Manager at 609-654-8898.

BOROUGH COUNCIL PROPOSES NEW ORDINANCE TO ELIMINATE COUNCIL SALARIES

At its February 25, 2009 meeting, Borough Council introduced on first reading a salary ordinance that would make all Council members “volunteers”. Since holding budget workshops in late 2008, Council has been evaluating all possible cost savings opportunities. Given current financial challenges and the increase in Council membership from three to five in 2010, Council voted to cut its own salaries to zero.
On introducing this ordinance, Mayor Paul G. Weiss stated, “While eliminating Council’s nominal salaries will not, by itself, balance the budget, this measure represents our contribution to addressing the Borough’s current and foreseeable financial difficulties. While admittedly small, Council must also share in the sacrifice that we are seeking from all Borough employees.”
Questions may be addressed to: Mayor Paul G. Weiss or Geoffrey Urbanik, Borough Manager at 609-654-8898.
