Pinelands-Friendly Yard & Garden Fair

With vast tracts of unbroken forest, an aquifer system that contains 17-trillion gallons of fresh water, and habitat for rare plants and animals, the million-acre Pinelands area of southern New Jersey is a natural treasure.

People can discover how they can help protect this special region during the second-annual “Pinelands-Friendly Yard & Garden Fair,” which will be held on Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge on 4 Sawmill Road in Medford Township, Burlington County.

The event will feature four nurseries selling native Pinelands plants, as well as live animal demonstrations, plant experts and several presentations, including a talk by Mike McGrath, host of the nationally-syndicated public radio talk show "You Bet Your Garden."

Here is a link to the event flyer. Please feel free to distribute this link and/or post it on your municipality's website:

In accordance with the provisions of the Open Public Meetings Act, N.J.S.A. 10:4-6 et seq. and Exceptions under N.J.S.A. 10:4-9 notice is hereby given that the Borough Council of the Borough of Medford Lakes will conduct an emergency meeting on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 5:30pm. Message from the Mayor

The severe storm last Friday demonstrated the seemingly whimsical power of Mother Nature. This storm also once again showed the tried and true determination of our residents to come together to help one another in a time of need. While there is much cleanup work left to be done in the ensuing days, we are back on our feet.

Our recovery to-date could not be possible without the dedicated service of our Borough first responders, EMS, fire, police, and our public works and administration staff. Under the leadership of our OEM coordinator and the able assistance of Medford’s Public Safety staff, the County, and the Red Cross, we successfully addressed the needs of our community. Also, the team from PSEG did an outstanding job restoring and re-restoring power to the town --their focused effort was instrumental to our recovery.

With neighbor helping neighbor, we have come through yet another beating from Mother Nature stronger as a community. On behalf of Borough Council, I wish to express my appreciation to all who served the Borough in its time of need. We are grateful for your efforts and commitment to our town.

Mayor Paul G. Weiss

STORM UPDATE

Last Friday the Borough experienced a severe windstorm that resulted in about 400 fallen trees and power was out for more than 2/3 of town. A state of emergency was declared by OEM Coordinator Steve Heicklen and all Police, Fire, EMS, DPW and Wastewater employees reported for duty. Emergency services from neighboring towns were brought in to cover while our crews worked on the recover efforts. PSE&G responded with a substantial number of crews to remove trees from power lines and restore power. By midnight Saturday more than 90% of the Borough had power and by noon on Sunday the emergency was declared over and the difficult job of cleanup was already underway. I commend the efforts of our emergency services volunteers, first responders and all active Borough employees who responded to the emergency call. We were fortunate in that all injuries were minor but through the coordinated and dedicated efforts of our first responders we were able to get the Borough back up and running in less than two days. Please keep in mind that cleanup efforts will take several weeks. We are identifying trees and limbs that require immediate attention and also hauling away the many trees already down. Residents hiring a tree service to remove their trees are urged to have the service remove the trunks and limbs to aid in the Borough's cleanup. Regular trash collection and recycling will continue normally, while bulk trash may be suspended for a period of time in August. If anyone continues to have power outages please call PSE&G at 888-436-7734 and other issues may be reported to DPW at 654-9383. Geoffrey Urbanik, Borough ManagerTAX BILLSThe tax bills will be mailed this week and 3rd quarter amounts will be due on August 31st. Once again the delays in certifying tax rates have resulted in a delayed billing. Sewer billing due on August 15th are not affected by this delay.
