Community Meeting On Dam Reconstruction - Thursday, October 5, 2006 7:00pm Vaughan Hall

The rebuilding of our Community continues as we move into the next phase of reconstructing the Upper and Lower Aetna Dams. As you may know, the Borough has awarded a contract to Northeast REMSCO, Inc. of Toms River, NJ to rebuild our dams and mobilization is underway and work is expected to start in October.

Our Engineering Firms, Alaimo Associates and Dewberry have scheduled an information meeting to outline and discuss with us, the planned activities and preventive measures that will be taken to ensure a safe and timely completion of these projects. Items to be discussed include the impact on surrounding homes and property, erosion control, landscape preservation, tree removal, pollution prevention, noise and dust control, traffic and safety concerns, demolition, clean up and debris removal. Northeast REMSCO will also discuss the pre-construction video and vibration monitoring requirements contained in the contract. There will also be ample opportunity for residents to ask questions of both the professionals and the contractor.

Please make every effort to attend this very informative meeting. Due to the limited parking available at Vaughan Hall, everyone is encouraged to car pool, bike or walk to Vaughan Hall. This is an important milestone in our recovery and your support in essential to a successful completion of these projects.

Oaks Hall Reconstruction

The excitement surrounding the “rebuilding” of our Community continues with activity at the site of our Municipal Cabin. The Borough has awarded a contract to John D. Lawrence, Inc. of Westville, NJ to pour concrete footings, foundation walls and a new slab for our new Oaks Hall. We expect to complete this aspect of construction by early October and anticipate delivery of our log building in November. The manufacturer, Heartbilt Homes, Inc., has advised us that the logs have been cut and are in the final stages of profiling. The building will be erected at the factory in Illinois and disassembled for shipping to Medford Lakes. The log building should arrive in early November and take about two weeks to reassemble on our site. In the time between now and arrival, Borough Council will advertise bids for roof sheeting and shingles and final tenant fit out. It is our goal to award a contract to a General Contractor and the appropriate subcontractors this year. This will enable us to occupy our Municipal Cabin early in 2007. Needless to say, we are all getting very excited and look forward to serving Medford Lakes from our new home.

Bulk Trash Collection

We are experiencing a seemingly endless flow of bulk trash in the Borough and Council is studying several options for managing the situation. These include changing the process and fees associated with this service.
There appears to be some confusion concerning what constitutes “bulk trash”. Bulk trash is those items that cannot fit into the trash cans provided to residents, such as, “white” goods, old refrigerators or washers. Bulk trash is not lots of ordinary trash that would otherwise fit into the trash can or debris generated from a construction project that should be placed in an on-site dumpster.

Presently, a resident can request a bulk trash picked up every Friday at no charge. Some are using the service quite frequently and the type and quantity of this trash appears to be growing. With our limited resources, we need to assess how to manage this increase in the most cost effective manner.

In addition to examining how other towns manage bulk trash, the Borough has assigned Mr. David Crane, our new Code Enforcement Officer, to track bulk trash pickups and make recommendations to Council.

We welcome your thoughts and ideas. Please share your suggestions on this important matter with members of Council

Sign Ordinance

The sign ordinance adopted in December 2005 allows “For Sale” signs to be placed on your own property provided there is only one sign per property, the sign is at least 10 ft from the roadway, is not more 6 square feet in area, nor more than 4 ft tall. Signs on public property or in the public right-of-way are not permitted and will be removed. It is illegal to attach a sign to a tree, fence or utility pole. Contractor signs are not permitted anywhere in the Borough. For more detailed information, visit www.medfordlakes.com, and go to Chapter 145, Section 60 under Ordinances. Thoughts and ideas? Please share your suggestions on this important matter with members of Council.

Proposed Redesign of Trading Post Way

Medford Lakes has received a grant from the State for a redesign of the intersection of Trading Post Way and Stokes Road. The Borough plans to bid and this project by December. Actual construction will be delayed until it can be coordinated with the Lower Aetna Dam reconstruction project but should be complete my mid 2007.
